Learn how to successfully manage and lead your laboratory

This course can be provided at request to groups of 8 to 20 participants and can be organized onsite anywhere in the world.


Management is a crucial, but often overlooked part of running a laboratory. It is, amongst others, a pivotal element in the successful implementation of projects such as the establishment of a quality management system. Many laboratory managers have the technical skills but have never received formal training in management and leadership.


Programme

This 5-day postgraduate course aims to provide participants with the knowledge and skills required for the successful running of a laboratory.


As such, this course is designed to:

  • Apply management strategies for the proper planning and coordination of a laboratory
  • Understand and apply leadership skills to maximally engage laboratory staff with the running and continuous improvement of the laboratory.
  • Enable the manager to properly budget for continuous availability of laboratory services


Teaching methodology based on adult learning principles

Successfully managing and leading a laboratory requires more than just knowledge. It also required the proper mindset, attitude and skills. This course employes modern adult learning techniques to provide participants with adequate competencies on all of these learning domains.  Some examples of methodologies employed: role-plays,  group exercises, mock assessments, brainstorming, etc. This way, the experience of the participants is optimally used to increase their leadership and management competencies.


Learning objectives

This course will teach the necessary knowledge, attitudes and skills needed to efficiently manage and adequately lead a  laboratory.


After this course participants will be able to:

  • Apply management strategies for the proper planning and coordination of a laboratory.
  • Apply leadership skills and styles to maximally engage laboratory staff with the running and continuous improvement of the laboratory.
  • Apply expert planning skills to coordinate improvement processes.
  • Use budgetting skills to ensure continuous availability of laboratory services.


At the end of the course participants will receive a certificate of attendance.


Who should participate?

This course is especially designed for laboratory managers and directors.


Prequalification

  • Current or future laboratory managers with a background in laboratory sciences at  BSc level or higher.
  • This is a laboratory oriented training: a laboratory background/knowledge of laboratory practice is required.
  • The course language is English. English speaking and writing ability is required.


Length of the course

The course has a duration of 5 days and a workload of 40 hours. This includes training hours and time spent on homework assignments.
