Title: Development of a National Essential Diagnostics List
Codes: D22-08
Date: March 2022 - June 2023
Location: The Gambia
Client: FIND, the Global Alliance for Diagnostics
Type of services:
Facilitation of the process of development of the National Essential Diagnostics List for The Gambia.
Reports:
[22 Jun 2023] Tjeerd Datema was in The Gambia last week to assist the Gambian National Essential Diagnostics Committee (NEDC) with the development of Gambia's National Essential Diagnostics List (NEDL) using the prototype FIND NEDL e-tool.
Since the start of 2022, DATOS, in collaboration with Lucy A. Perrone, has developed an e-tool for FIND that assists countries with stepwise development and implementation of an NEDL as a critical step towards universal health coverage. As such, the tool will assist countries to optimize quality, capacity and accessibility of diagnostic services for the most prevalent diseases to the entire population. After extensive peer review by experts from the field, this prototype e-tool is now being piloted in The Gambia.
Earlier this year Tjeerd provided training to the Gambian NEDC on the purpose, structure, and method of developing an NEDL, and on FIND's prototype NEDL e-tool. After this training the NEDC members proceeded with collecting the required data for development of the Gambian NEDL. Last week, the data was consolidated and the Gambian NEDC started developing the first draft NEDL of The Gambia.

[2 Mar 2023] Tjeerd Datema was in The Gambia last week to assist the Gambian National Essential Diagnostics Committee (NEDC) with the development of Gambia's National Essential Diagnostics List (NEDL).
Since the start of 2022, DATOS, in collaboration with Lucy A. Perrone, has developed an e-tool for stepwise development and implementation of an NEDL for FIND, the global alliance for diagnostics. This digital tool guides countries in a stepwise manner with developing and implementing an NEDL as a critical step towards universal health coverage, using the World Health Organization's Essential Diagnostics List and key reference documents for imaging services. As such, the tool will assist countries to optimize quality, capacity and accessibility of diagnostic services for the most prevalent diseases to the entire population. After extensive peer review by experts from the field, the e-tool is now being piloted in Zimbabwe and The Gambia.
Last week, Tjeerd Datema provided training to the Gambian NEDC on the purpose, structure, and method for developing an NEDL, and on FIND's prototype Stepwise NEDL e-tool. After the training the NEDC members directly proceeded with collecting the required data for development of the Gambian NEDL. They will continue with this over the coming months and aim to present the first draft NEDL for The Gambia in June this year. The event was nicely captured in this movie.
